Rapid rescore: when it's worth it
Pay down + rescore can move 40-100 points in 72 hours.
What rapid rescore is
A mortgage-only service where your lender pays the bureaus to push an updated trade line within 72 hours instead of the normal 30-45 days. It is not available to consumers directly.
When it's worth $25-$50 per item per bureau
Only when you're crossing a pricing tier. Mortgage rates step at:
620 → 660 → 700 → 720 → 740 → 760 → 780
Going from 738 → 742 changes nothing. Going from 718 → 722 saves you 0.25% on the rate for 30 years. On a $400k mortgage that's ~$20,000 over the life of the loan.
The fastest score-boosting actions before a rescore
- Pay every revolving balance to $1 (not $0)
- Pay down installment loans below 69% of original balance
- Have the host issuer raise your credit limit (soft pull from most)
- Have unauthorized inquiries / errors deleted via dispute
Timeline
- Day 0: Pay balances
- Day 1-2: Get paid-in-full / new-balance letters from issuers
- Day 3: Lender submits to bureaus
- Day 4-5: New trade line posts, new score pulls
The trap to avoid
Don't pay to $0 on every card right before the rescore — FICO sometimes drops "no recent revolving activity" points. AZEO (all-zero-except-one at 1-9%) is safer.
