Review a dispute packet for clarity and support

Check the specific factual issue, supporting documents, recipient, and final client review.

Identify the concern

A useful packet identifies a specific account or report entry and the field being questioned. Explain what is shown, what the consumer believes is correct, and why. Do not add claims the consumer has not made or facts that the records do not support.

Check attachments

Match each attachment to the stated issue. A statement may support a balance question, while a payment confirmation may support a payment-date question. Check dates, readability, and account identifiers. Remove unrelated pages and unnecessary personal details without obscuring information needed to identify the issue.

Resolve inconsistencies

Compare the explanation, report excerpt, and supporting records. If names, dates, amounts, or account details conflict, pause and ask the client. Never edit a source document to make it appear to say something different. Keep unknown facts unknown.

Confirm delivery details

Use the recipient’s current submission instructions. Check the address or online destination, selected documents, and the final letter. A packet prepared for one bureau or furnisher is not automatically appropriate for another.

Record the final version

Have the client review the final facts. Retain the exact materials submitted, submission date and method, and available delivery evidence. For a regulator filing, preserve the genuine confirmation rather than treating a draft as filed.

A clear packet helps communicate the concern but does not guarantee deletion, correction, legal compliance, or a response by a particular date.
