Life after a 740

How to push from 740 to 800+ and what it actually unlocks.

What 740+ actually unlocks

ScoreWhat it unlocks
740Best mortgage rates (conventional + jumbo)
760Best auto loan rates, premium auto insurance pricing in most states
780Top-tier credit cards (Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve)
800+Mostly bragging rights — rate differences vs 780 are usually $0

The 740 → 800 playbook

After 740, big jumps stop being possible. You move in 5-10 point increments by perfecting:

  1. Utilization at 1% (not 0%, not 5%) — AZEO month over month
  2. Zero hard inquiries in the last 12 months
  3. AAoA above 8 years
  4. No new accounts opened in the last 24 months
  5. Mix of 3+ revolving + 1+ installment, all in good standing

What stops mattering at 800

  • Closing one old card (you have enough age elsewhere)
  • An isolated single hard pull
  • A new card with a high limit (utilization absorbs the hit)

Diminishing returns

The honest truth: nobody underwrites you differently at 820 vs 780. Use the discipline you built getting here to never go below 740 rather than chasing the last 30 points.

Maintenance, not climbing

Set a quarterly calendar reminder:

  • Pull all 3 reports (free at annualcreditreport.com)
  • Confirm AZEO is being reported as planned
  • Dispute anything inaccurate within 30 days of it appearing
